Five teardowns

The same five listings I see over and over, pulled apart the way I'd pull apart yours. Different categories, different mistakes, one pattern underneath: the title is written for the seller, not for the person searching.

About these examples

These are worked examples, not client case studies. I've written them from the listing patterns that show up constantly in my own categories and in shops I look at. No shop names, because I'm not going to put someone's business on a sales page to sell my own.

When you send me a listing you get this exact treatment on your own product, with your own words.

Teardown 01 · Home & kitchen

The hyphen list

A common Etsy title pattern: broad fragments strung together with dashes, making the product harder to scan and understand.

Before

Cutting Board - Handmade Gift - Wood - Custom - Personalized - Kitchen - Wedding - Anniversary - Gift for Her - Gift for Him

  • 01The opening is hard to scan. It starts with broad fragments instead of quickly identifying the specific product.
  • 02The title reads like a keyword list. A run of one-word fragments makes the product harder to scan and leaves less room for specific product information.
  • 03Recipient phrases are doing too much work. "Gift for Her" and "Gift for Him" are broad and contradictory here; the product itself should carry more of the title.

124 characters · 0 phrases longer than two words

After

Personalized Cutting Board, Custom Engraved Walnut Charcuterie Board, Wedding Gift for Couple, Housewarming Gift

  • 01Opens with the actual product. "Personalized cutting board" tells a shopper what the item is immediately.
  • 02Four distinct buying occasions. Engraved walnut, charcuterie, wedding, housewarming.
  • 03Minimal repetition. The title uses its space for distinct product details instead of repeating the same wording.

Teardown 02 · Digital downloads

The file-format title

Digital sellers sometimes over-emphasize file format and delivery method while under-describing the actual artwork or product.

Before

Printable Wall Art Digital Download PDF JPG PNG Instant Download Printable Art Print Home Decor Digital Print

  • 01It never says what the art is of. The subject is missing, so the listing gives Etsy and shoppers less specific information about the product.
  • 02"Printable" three times, with repeated "download" and "digital" wording. Repetition uses title space without adding much new product information.
  • 03File types dominate the title. Unless format is essential to what the product is, the title usually benefits from prioritizing the subject and key product traits first.

108 characters · 0 words describing the actual artwork

After

Botanical Line Art Printable Set of 3, Minimalist Wall Art Digital Download, Neutral Living Room Decor, Instant Download

  • 01The subject leads. "Botanical line art" and "set of three" tell the shopper exactly what the product is.
  • 02A style and a room. "Minimalist" and "neutral living room decor" add useful descriptive context without repeating the same product noun.
  • 03"Instant download" survives, once. It reassures the buyer at the end, without eating the front of the title.

Teardown 03 · Jewellery

The brand-name opener

Your shop name may matter to returning customers, but it can make a product title harder to scan when it appears before the actual item.

Before

LunaBelle Designs - Necklace - Sterling Silver - Personalized - Handmade Jewelry

  • 01The product is buried behind the shop name. A shopper scanning results has to get past the brand before learning what the item actually is.
  • 02"Necklace" on its own is too broad. The title needs more accurate product detail to distinguish this item from other necklace listings.
  • 03The title lacks useful purchase context. If recipient or occasion is genuinely central to this item, one relevant phrase can add context without turning the title into a gift-keyword list.

80 characters · concise, but still missing useful product context

After

Personalized Name Necklace Sterling Silver, Dainty Custom Nameplate Pendant, Bridesmaid Gift, Gift for Mom

  • 01The product and material lead. "Personalized name necklace" and "sterling silver" clearly describe what the buyer is looking at.
  • 02A style word buyers use. "Dainty" is how people actually describe what they want in this category, and it filters out the wrong shoppers.
  • 03Recipient language is limited. If these recipients are genuinely relevant to the product, one or two focused phrases add context without dominating the title.

Teardown 04 · Print on demand

The comma pile

Swapping hyphens for commas doesn't fix anything if what sits between them is still single words.

Before

Funny Shirt, Cat Shirt, Cat Lover, Gift, Tee, Womens, Mens, Unisex, Graphic Tee, Cute, Sarcastic, Trendy

  • 01Twelve fragments with little specificity. Broad words such as "Gift", "Cute" and "Trendy" do not explain what makes this particular shirt distinctive.
  • 02It never says what the shirt says. The whole appeal of a funny tee is the joke on the front, and the title hides it.
  • 03"Womens", "Mens" and "Unisex" all at once. Contradictory audience wording makes the title less precise and can confuse a shopper.

113 characters · 8 of 12 terms are single generic words

After

Funny Cat Mom Shirt, Sarcastic Cat Lover Graphic Tee, Crazy Cat Lady Gift, Unisex Cotton T-Shirt

  • 01A clearer audience concept. "Cat mom" and "crazy cat lady" describe the intended audience more specifically than a generic "gift" label.
  • 02The tone is stated. "Sarcastic" adds a concrete style descriptor that helps explain what kind of graphic tee is being sold.
  • 03One fit, one fabric. Unisex cotton, said once, is more useful than three contradictory audience words.

96 characters · four distinct descriptive phrases

Teardown 05 · Wedding stationery

The poetic name

Beautiful branding, invisible listing. If Etsy can't work out what the product is, it can't show it to anybody.

Before

Eternal Whispers Suite

  • 01The product is not identifiable. The title reads like a collection name, but it never tells a shopper that this is wedding stationery.
  • 02The product type is missing. Etsy cannot tell whether this is an invitation, a sign, a template or a dress, so it can't place it in any category of search.
  • 03Too little product information. At 22 characters, the issue is not unused space itself โ€” it is that the title never explains the product, format or purpose.

22 characters · product type and purpose are missing

After

Minimalist Wedding Invitation Template, Editable Modern Invite Suite, Printable Boho Wedding Stationery, Canva Template

  • 01Product type stated twice, two ways. "Wedding invitation template" and "wedding stationery" catch two different search habits.
  • 02Several concrete style cues. Minimalist, modern and boho add more descriptive information than the broad word "wedding" alone.
  • 03"Editable" and "Canva" answer the buying question. In this category the first thing a buyer needs to know is whether they can change the text themselves.
