Etsy SEO Checklist 2026: A Listing-by-Listing Audit

Etsy search now takes a holistic view of a listing. Use this checklist to review the fields Etsy can use without turning every title and tag into a pile of repeated keywords.

1. Title

  • Clearly name the item for sale.
  • Put the most useful objective traits near the beginning for buyer clarity.
  • Keep it easy to scan; Etsy's current guidance suggests considering fewer than about 15 words.
  • Avoid unnecessary repetition.
  • Move subjective words such as “perfect” or “beautiful” out of the title.
  • Do not fill the title with price, sale or shipping copy.
  • Use occasion or recipient language only when it genuinely helps define the item.

The 140-character limit is a maximum, not a target. A shorter title can be healthier than a stuffed 140-character title.

2. Tags

  • Use all relevant tag slots; Etsy allows up to 13.
  • Keep each tag within Etsy's 20-character limit.
  • Avoid exact duplicates.
  • Use natural multi-word phrases where they fit.
  • Vary relevant concepts instead of repeating the same word across most tags.
  • Do not invent irrelevant synonyms merely for diversity.

Etsy also uses categories and attributes for matching, so structured listing information should carry information where appropriate instead of every idea being forced into tags.

3. Description

  • Explain the product clearly in the opening sentences.
  • Use important relevant wording naturally.
  • Do not paste the entire title at the top as a keyword block.
  • Answer the buyer's practical questions: what is included, size, material, format, customization, delivery or processing where relevant.
  • Break long copy into readable sections.

4. Category and attributes

Choose the most specific relevant category and complete the attributes that actually apply. Etsy says categories and attributes contribute to matching, so ignoring them can leave useful structured information unused.

5. Photos and conversion readiness

SEO gets the listing considered; buyers still need to choose it. Make the first photo understandable at a glance and use additional images to answer visual questions. Do not treat a title score as a replacement for conversion work.

6. Measure instead of endlessly rewriting

After making meaningful changes, watch Shop Stats and Search Visibility. If the listing is already structurally strong, the next improvement may be product demand, photos, price, offer or positioning rather than more keyword editing.

Fast version: clear item name + relevant traits + 13 varied tags + specific category/attributes + useful description + strong first photo + buyer confidence.
